ICT-110E

E-ENVIRONMENT – ICTs FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Description

A 5-day Training Program to provide participants with an understanding of e-environment issues and their inter-relationship. The Program will help countries and organizations think strategically and, within the context of their development plans and priorities, about how ICTs can be used to reduce environmental impact, while increasing environmental and energy efficiency, and enhancing environmental management in order to help countries limit Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and meet their obligations under the Kyoto Protocol and its likely successor agreement(s). The Program includes discussion of how ICTs contribute to the mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change.

Objectives

  • Teach participants how ICTs impact the environment as a result of:
    • Changes in human behaviour resulting from people and organizations taking advantage of ICTs
    • Their use in the study and management of the environment
    • The energy and materials used in their production, use and disposal, i.e. during the course of their life cycle
    • Savings in energy and consumption based on more efficient e-business processes
  • Help participants understand the importance of the environment and of climate change in development and the urgency attached to dealing with climate change
  • Help participants understand what e-environment is and why it is important from a development perspective as well as the trends driving e-environment
  • Help participants realize the environmental and other development benefits resulting from the use of ICTs, i.e. increased research and education networking, enhanced decision-making, improved quality of life
  • Help participants take advantage of existing and upcoming e-environment initiatives and funding, including Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
  • Help participants integrate e-environmental concerns in development plans and activities with a view to reducing overall environmental impact and specifically GHG emissions while helping countries meet their development objectives as well as their treaty obligations under the Kyoto and other environmental protocols and/or agreements as may be appropriate

Topics

  • The environment and international development
    • The evolution of environmental perception and opinions
    • Environmental issues and challenges
      • Disasters, environmental and climate change
      • Mitigation of and adaptation to climate change
