ICTs FOR POVERTY REDUCTION

Description

A 5-day Training Program to provide participants with an understanding of the relationship between ICTs and poverty. The Program will allow participants to better understand how ICTs can be used to help tackle poverty and improve the quality of life of people. It will also look at top down as well as bottom up approaches that use ICTs to tackle poverty. This will include looking at the impact of ICTs on livelihoods, on national as well as local and community development, on promoting social, human and economic development, and on pro-poor growth. It will also consider policies that governments can take to promote the use of ICTs for economic development and poverty reduction.

Objectives

  • Provide participants with a sound understanding of the nature of poverty, of the underlying causes of poverty and of the importance of poverty reduction to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
  • Provide participants with knowledge of different approaches used to fight poverty including the concept of pro-poor growth
  • Provide participants with a sound understanding of the role of ICTs in development so they can devise appropriate interventions to reduce and, in some cases, eliminate poverty
  • Provide participants with an understanding of which ICTs have the greatest potential to reduce poverty under given circumstances
  • Help participants devise strategies and approaches including how to structure and finance projects to use ICTs to tackle poverty in their jurisdictions and at various levels: nationally, regionally and at the local and community level
